WORCESTER, Mass. - The city says the Courthouse Lofts in downtown Worcester highlight the work being done to repurpose old buildings.
The former Worcester courthouse is made up of more than 100 units, ranging from studios to 3-bedroom units.
The complex opened earlier this year and is already completely full.
Across the way from the old courthouse is the old Lincoln Square Boys Club and Worcester Voke building, which is slated to become a senior housing complex.
City Manager Edward Augustus, Jr. says these two developments, mixed in with the repurposing of the former Memorial Auditorium, creates new vibrancy in downtown.
"I kind of talked about them as a ‘Berlin wall’ that had separated the energy that was happening on Main Street and downtown, that organically existed on Highland Street,” Augustus said. “And by bringing these buildings back online and putting more people who want to go to the Bean Counter, and The Boynton, and Armsby Abbey, these buildings are weaving that energy together and creating more walkability."
The former Boys Club project is on schedule to be completed by 2023 and is being overseen by Winn Development company.
