WORCESTER, Mass. - If you’ve got a passion for cheese in your life, your dream job may be waiting for you in Worcester’s Canal District.

Smith’s Cheese Shop inside the Worcester Public Market is looking for their next part-time cheese sales team member.

What You Need To Know

  • Smith's Cheese Shop is hiring a part-time sales member

  • Shifts are weekday afternoon and weekend shifts start in the morning

  • The job includes selling cheese from Smith's Dairy Farm and from other farms across the state, New England and New York

  • Perks include a discount on cheese and free samples

The shop -- which opened in February 2020 with the Market’s opening -- sells cheese from Smith’s Dairy Farm in Winchendon. The farm is owned by Leah Catlin and her husband, Mike, and Mike’s brother, Jake Catlin and his wife, Allie.

The shop closed briefly during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic from mid-March to June 2020, but has remained open since.

In a phone interview on Wednesday morning, Leah Catlin tells Spectrum News 1 the unlikely way her family took over Smith’s farm back in 2016.

“We all grew up in Ashburnham. We had heard (Smith's Dairy farm owner) Dave Smith was looking to sell his dairy farm. We didn’t know anything about farming. (Jake and Allie) asked Dave if they bought the farm would he stay on and train them to run it,” Leah said. “He agreed to do it, said it sounded like a great idea, but suggested to them they find another couple to help them run it.”

And that’s where Leah and Mike turned their lives upside down to make the family's dream happen. The couple moved back from Atlanta, Leah quit her job teaching and Mike quit his job as an adviser at Emory University. They sold their house and moved back to Massachusetts.

“We jumped in feet first. We’ve been living out this farm adventure ever since,” Leah said. “We’re moving and shaking.”

And now the adventure is going so well, the Catlins are looking to bring on a new team member for their Worcester Public Market shop.

The job? Selling cheese in the shop from Smith’s Dairy farm, and other cheeses from across the state, New England and New York.

“I think people think they need to know a ton about cheese for this position,” Leah said. “But, like us, they can learn about cheese. We can teach them about the cheese we sell. We can teach you everything you want to know about cheese, but we’re really looking for someone with a positive attitude and good customer service skills.”

The job includes facilitating the shop’s grab-and-go service of pre-packaged cheese, fulfilling cut-to-order service from wheels of cheese.

The hours are weekday afternoon shifts and weekend shifts starting in the morning and ending early in the afternoon.

And the perks? Discounts on cheese and free samples. What more can you ask for? Smith’s is looking to fill the position as soon as possible.
