PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The cast and crew of "A Crossing" are running through their final rehearsals before the musical makes its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company next week.

“This show is the story of a group of migrants to cross the border from Mexico to the U.S,” director and co-choreographer, Joshua Bergasse, said. “They all come from different backgrounds, and they’re all looking to start a new life in the United States.”

What You Need To Know

  • "A Crossing" is a new musical making its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company on September 23
  • The show is about a group of migrants crossing the U.S. – Mexico border
  • The goal of the show is to help people better understand the lives of migrants
  • Director Joshua Bergasse is the son of immigrants, and choreographer Alberto Lopez crossed the border from Mexico as a child

Bergasse’s parents are both immigrants, and he’s wanted to tell this story for years. He hopes this show will help humanize the people coming to the U.S. across the southern border.

“I really wanted to show what they go through, where they come from, what their hopes and dreams are, and the reality and danger of making the choice to make this crossing,” Bergasse said.

The show relies heavily on dance to help tell the story. For co-choreographer Alberto Lopez, the story is a very personal one, having crossed the border himself when he was a child.

“When they offered this opportunity to me, it was no doubt it accept it right away because this is part of my story,” Lopez, who was born in Mexico, said. “This is part of me.”

Lopez wants people to get a better understanding about the lives of migrants, and he’s 100% confident it will have a lasting impact on everyone in the audience.

“I know every single person, after they see the show, they’re going to feel proud about what they bring to this country and what they are,” Lopez said.

"A Crossing" runs from September 23 through October 17 at the Boyd-Quinson Stage in Pittsfield.
