WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Regional Airport is open for commercial service.
JetBlue resumed service between Worcester and JFK International Airport in New York last month.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says reopening the airport involved installing new safety measures such as acrylic barriers, like those found at Logan Airport in Boston.
The TSA says passenger count has dipped since the pandemic started and again with the delta variant and so has the number of transportation security officers (TSOs).
“Some of the challenges that smaller airports face, like Worcester, is manning. You want to make sure your manning is up there. Smaller airports usually have manning issues,” Dan Velez, spokesperson for TSA New England, said. “Our smaller airports have persevered. They have the same rules. They see less traffic, but there is fewer TSO’s at the smaller airports."
Delta announced earlier this month the airline would be offering daily service between Worcester and La Guardia airport this fall.
American Airlines is also bringing back its daily, nonstop flight to Philadelphia International Airport this fall.
