CHICOPEE, Mass. - Temperatures hit the mid to upper 90s on Thursday afternoon, but the kids at Chicopee Memorial State Park didn't seem to mind.
"I just went with my mom and we wanted to go somewhere where it is cool because it is super hot today," said 10-year-old Mya Yates.
It was hot, but it was the perfect day to spend some time by the water, whether it be grilling, tanning, or going for a dip.
"I'm going to be swimming in the lake and making sand castles," Yates said.
Some parkgoers said it was their first time here all summer.
"It's my birthday so we wanted to celebrate with the kids. They were like 'Let's go,'" said Denese Rees.
Rees said it was nice to bring the kids out before they have to return to school, but was making sure they stayed hydrated.
"The kids wanted to go swimming because it's so hot so we figured it would cool them off," she said.
Although Chicopee Memorial State Park didn't hit full capacity, most people preferred staying in the Chicopee Reservoir, instead of on the sand.
"The shade is where I want to be, but I want to go in the water, too," said Hamila Abdullahi, who was there for the first time.
Many were making good use of the sunny day to spend it with friends and family.
"It feels good. I have a lot of fun with my sisters and cousin," Abdullahi's sister, Asiya, said.
Friday's temperatures are going to be similar with another heat advisory in effect.
