PITTSFIELD, Mass. - After more than a decade of trying, the City of Pittsfield finally has an agreement with a developer to redevelop the old fire house on Tyler Street.

North Adams development group, CT Management, will convert the more than 100-year old building into four units of market-rate housing.

At this week’s meeting, the City Council approved $100,000 in Community Preservation Act funds for the project, which will be used for immediate repairs to the roof and the foundation.

The building hasn’t been used as a fire station since the 1970s.

For community development director, Deanna Ruffer, it’s very satisfying to finally find a buyer for the property, and she thinks housing project is a good fit for the city’s efforts to revitalize the neighborhood.

“We are in the midst of starting a comprehensive streetscape program,” said Ruffer. “Which will create many pedestrian amenities along Tyler Street, as well as slowing the traffic and making better accommodations for biking and other means of transportation, so the timing is absolutely perfect.”

There is no firm timetable for construction on the project, but the city is hopeful it can be done within the next couple of years.
