BOYLSTON, Mass. - A mystery bird illness is making its way across the country.

There are no documented cases in Massachusetts yet, but wildlife experts are asking people to help prevent it from spreading.

In short, they say birds should be practicing "physical distancing."

Dawn Davies, Tower Hill Botanic Garden's horticulture manager, says people can help by emptying bird feeders and removing bird baths.

Davies says the illness seems to be impacting mostly young "backyard birds." She says symptoms include eye issues and neurological problems in birds, like disorientation which can be fatal.

"Nature provides plenty of food for the birds. During this time of year, birds are actually looking to feed their families so they are eating a fair amount of insects,” Davies said. “So think about how you manage your yard, as far as treating with pesticide, because as the insects are actually a good source of food you do not want to be applying pesticides to your plants that would actually kill off insects that the birds could be feeding their plants with."

Davies says it's still unclear what causes the disease. Right now, it doesn't appear to be transmitting to other animals or humans.
