WORCESTER, Mass. - Mayor Joe Petty wants to make sure the City is prepared to finance a third new high school if they are approved by the state.
Petty says they're interested in building a new Burncoat high school. Right now, the City is already in the process of building new Doherty Memorial and South high schools.
The City Council recently resubmitted a statement of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority for Burncoat.
Petty says they most likely won't hear back until the end of this year or early next year if it's approved.
"Burncoat high school is very important to get done. The Burncoat neighborhood, they’ve been looking for that for a number of years. The school is outdated. It’s going to be a beautiful facility when it’s done over, along with the athletic fields,” Petty said. “There’s a lot of space up there, there’s a lot of good things to be done."
Burncoat High School was built in 1964.
