BELCHERTOWN, Mass. - Residents in Belchertown are left with a mess after the torrential rain over the weekend.

East Street collapsed after downpours led to massive flooding. A beaver dam breached less than a mile away which sent the rushing water down here. Some residents had five feet of water in their basement.

Linda Wood and her husband were left trapped early Sunday morning after their driveway was washed out.

"We came out and this entire area was under water," Wood said. "There was a river running this way and around the other side of our house. They asked if we wanted to evacuate, my husband said no we need to stay and protect our property so that is what we did."

Cleanup efforts were still underway on Tuesday. East Street remains closed and the town's department of public works was helping to clean up the road. DPW workers said they haven't seen anything quite like this.

"Not to this extent. This isn't normal," said Chris Johnson, a heavy equipment operator with Belchertown DPW. "It happened on a different road a couple months ago but this is not what we are used to."

For Wood's driveway, it could be months.

"This is miraculous it looks like this right now, they got the cars uncovered, we were able to get them out. They are working on the driveway," said Wood. "This is just crazy."

Still, they are thankful the home they have lived in for 24 years is still standing and no one was hurt.

"Very, very grateful for what could've been a worse situation," said Wood.

Wood added she is thankful for the support they have received from members of the community and state leaders. Senator Eric Lesser and Representative Jake Olivera will be visiting the site on Wednesday morning.
