WORCESTER, Mass. - A city councilor is calling a long vacant lot an eyesore in Worcester.
The former Big D/Price Chopper property on Mill Street has been closed for nearly 20 years.
Councilor Gary Rosen says while he understands the owner of the building pays taxes and has property rights, something needs to be done to the site.
In an item on Tuesday night’s council agenda, Rosen refers to the property as “...an inexcusable blight on the neighborhood…”
“The owner of the property has talked several times about putting in housing, apartments or condos. He’s always talked about the project. He had some testing done up on the big hill behind the old market. It just never goes further than that though. It’s talk, it’s ideas, it’s thoughts, it’s never any action,” Rosen said. “It’s almost 20 years that the place has been decaying and it’s been an eyesore and bringing down this neighborhood
Rosen is asking the city's law department to find out what options the city has to protect both the property owner's rights as well the neighbors who live in the area.
