CHICOPEE, Mass. - A pair of Chicopee police officers were recognized for their actions to save a young girls life who fell into a swimming pool last month.

Two-year-old Alianas was unresponsive when officers began life-saving CPR. The incident happened at Sarah Jane Sherman Memorial State Pool, when officers Jacek "Jack" Wanat and Flordemaris Delarosa responded to a call after the girl was reported missing.

"I was just doing my job pretty much," said Officer Wanat. "Training and adrenaline kicked in and I did what I had to do and the outcome was good."

When police responded to the pool, Alianas' father, Orlando Rivera, had gotten her out of the pool. He handed her to Officer Wanat who did CPR assisted by Officer Delarosa.

Hilda Torres, a family member, translated for Rivera, and said, "He will never forget that moment and he will never forget the officer that helped him bring his daughter back to life."

It was an emotional moment at Tuesday's city council meeting when the officers were greeted by the family.

"As soon as I walked in, the mother gave me a big hug and was very thankful," Wanat said. "It was all worth it."

"To see them was really emotional," Delarosa said.

The family told Spectrum News 1 the officers are the reason their daughter is alive today. "For me, my hero, that was the father and both officers," said Alianas' mother, Tatiana Matos. "They do a great job and saved my baby's life."

Mayor John Vieau, along with state rep. Jake Oliveira, and state senator Adam Gomez, honored the officers. While Wanat and Delarosa said the recognition is nice, all they did was their job.

"It feels like we are actually appreciated," Wanat said. "They see what we are doing every day on a day to day basis. It was nice."

"I want to thank my department because a lot of us don't always get that recognition, but we do this every single day and we do it because we care," said Delarosa.

Wanat and Delarosa said it was a team effort and any other Chicopee officer would have done the same thing.
