WORCESTER, Mass. - A local ophthalmologist is reminding people of the dangers associated with using fireworks.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 injuries treated in U.S. hospitals last year involved fireworks. About two-thirds of those injuries took place around July 4.

Dr. Gabriel Luna, an Ophthalmologist at UMass Memorial Health, says fireworks are dangerous and says the July 4th holiday is an especially risky time for eye injuries.  Dr. Luna says fireworks can cause chemical injuries, thermal burns and in many cases permanent blindness.

"Playing with fireworks can blind you or your loved ones. So please, leave the fireworks for the professionals," Dr. Luna said. "The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises that the best way to prevent any fireworks eye injury is by attending a professional public fireworks show, rather than purchasing fireworks for home use."

Dr. Luna says if an eye injury from fireworks occurs, seek medical attention immediately. Do not touch or remove anything from the eye.
