MILLBURY, Mass. - David Delaney loves the sound of coins make spinning on a table. The ones made with real silver, sound a little different.

He owns Delaney’s Coin Shop in Millbury. It's been a dream of his since he was seven years old.

"Hardcore coin guys and I, we are best friends," joked Delaney. "We are almost brothers immediately."

David used to own a laundromat in town, but when his mother died in January, he promised himself he wouldn't spend another day doing something that didn't make him happy.

"This is my passion," he said. "I'm not folding laundry anymore I am just focusing on something I enjoy."

The father of five has around 700,000 coins in his collection and he's hoping to sell them all.

"I want to put my kids through college," Delaney said. "If I sold the laundromat, the only thing I know is my coin collection."

What You Need To Know

  • David Delaney sold his laundromat to follow a lifelong dream
  •  He has been collecting coins for 45 years
  • He has 700,000 coins in his collection and he is selling them all to help pay for his five children to go to college
  • It's one of the only coin shops in the area

He’s already sold some of his rarest coins, like one dating back to 1732. David also buys coins, each has a story, like the 1916 standing Liberty quarter. He said it’s been touched by millions who had no idea of its value.

“This one little tiny quarter probably sat in some guys pocket in Boston ordering a beer, rubbing it and wishing on it for good luck," said Delaney.

If you're wondering if he gets sad watching his coins go, don't worry. He makes sure each one of them ends up in good hands.

"It's kind of cool to know that a coin you owned is actually going to a museum now because there was only two known in the world," said Delaney.

The coin shop is one of the only ones in the area. People aren't as into coin collecting like they used to be, but David hopes his shop can help bring the hobby back.
