WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Public Library says a new television comedy series, which has a lot of Worcester in it, doesn’t represent what the library is really like.
“In the show, they depicted a medical emergency not being met (at the library). And that is something we take very seriously here at the Worcester Public Library and, in fact, in all libraries," Jason Homer, the library's executive director, said.
Homer says while the library gets the stereotypical jokes in AMC's "Kevin Can F**k Himself," they’re not laughing at every scene. He says the library is safe, is being updated, and doesn't block information for adults.
The AMC sitcom is loosely set in Worcester and stars Annie Murphy as sitcom wife, "Allison Roberts." The show purposely flips the switch on the mainstream television sitcom, featuring Murphy as the show's focus, instead of "Kevin Roberts," Allison's husband, played by Eric Petersen.
“When we have depictions of the library that are someone's narrow minded view of libraries," Homer said. "It does harm our reputation so we're excited to show what the real Worcester Public Library does."
The main branch of the Worcester Public library is finishing up a $12 million renovation project. It includes a new children’s area which will have space for crafts, interactive projections, and room for storytelling.
“We are super excited to show off this new space and to show the city that we are pivoting with them as the city is growing, the library is growing as well," Homer said.
Homer says hopes the renovations bring more people to library. Only about 45% of city residents currently use Iit. Although he says there’s has been a 600% increase in teen use at the library because of the pandemic.
The library’s other renovations include a new teen center and an innovation center, which will have 3D printers and sewing machines.
