A Shrewsbury man's design is chosen for the Harvey Ball 100th Birthday Commemorative Logo Contest put on by the Worcester Historical Museum.
Liam Monahan incorporated Harvey Ball's original smiley face and added "100 glasses," which the selection committee says gave the character an older, more distinguished look.
Ball was a freelance artist who invented the iconic smiley face in 1963.
Monahan's design will be used for a commemorative pin handed out to the first 100 attendees at the Harvey Ball 100th Birthday Celebration in July.
23-year-old Monahan said he designed the art from hand, like Ball, and got the idea for the glasses from ones he would see on New Year’s Eve.
“Doing a little research of Harvey Ball and researching photos of him at his drawing desk And seeing how he was drying it all by hand and the idea for the glasses was inspired by the New Year’s Eve glasses what does zeros as the glasses” said Monahan.
The 100th birthday celebration is scheduled for Friday July 9 from 4 to 5 pm on the Worcester Common.
