WORCESTER, Mass. - Nearly 100 city trees could be removed as part of Worcester's "Right tree, right place" initiative.

Department of Public Works and Parks Assistant Commissioner Rob Antonelli says the removal revolves around resurfacing roads and sidewalks.

The public shade trees being removed are located all across the city, including dozens being taken down in the area of Newton Avenue and Salisbury Street.

Antonelli says if the trees are impacting the structural integrity of roads or sidewalks, or making sidewalks not fully accessible, they will be removed.

The City’s Parks and Recreation Commission will meet Thursday night to discuss the proposal.

“The goal is to refurbish the street, get it right, and then get trees put back in that may be smaller, but have a longer life cycle now for that tree to grow and prosper in the neighborhood,” Antonelli said.

Removal of the trees could begin as early as this summer.  Smaller trees will be planted once the project is complete.
