WORCESTER, Mass. - Hundreds of families received food and essentials on Tuesday at an event at the Main Street YMCA in Worcester.
Businesses, City officials and Worcester schools were on hand to distribute the supplies as school ended in the city.
Several organizations provided families with a 25-pound box of food, a 15-pound box of essentials for families in need and a backpack full of school supplies. Tuesday's event was part of Price Rite's initiative feeding minds and bodies.
According to Feed the Children, just over 10% of the Worcester population is at risk for hunger.
"Being able to partner with Feed the Children and give food and need to some that may not be able to afford even you know an extra dollar worth of something is important to us,” Bill Devin, Vice President of Operations for Price Rite Marketplace. “As school's ending, during the summer we see the need increase even more as well because they're no longer going to school to get those school lunches. So this is just another opportunity for us to supply them with food."
Feed the Children is at Saint George Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield on Wednesday as part of their eight city program in the Northeast. Around 26,000 pounds of food and school supplies were distributed Tuesday.
