The city of Worcester is expressing interest in rebuilding another high school.

Last week, City Manager Ed Augustus recommended the city council approve the resubmittal of a Statement of Interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority for Burncoat High School.

The city manager said Worcester has been aggressive when it comes to investing in its educational infrastructure.

Augustus said the expectations of what's in a high school have changed since Burncoat was built in 1964, and they hope to address those needs soon.

He said, "What are in the science labs? What are in the athletic facilities? What are in the arts and performance spaces, and Burncoat is our arts quadrant. So those spaces are particularly important for those programs there. We need to do more than one thing at a time. It's not just the ballpark, it's not just downtown development. But it is in our neighborhoods, our parks, and our schools."

Burncoat was not invited into the MSBA's eligibility period in 2020, when the city initially sent in a request.

Another request is required if the city intends on rebuilding the school.
