A trio of women made history in Worcester Saturday, becoming the first all-female engine crew.

Robin Melvin, Gina Genatossio-Lauder, and Melissa Mercadante were on Engine 2 working out of the Southbridge Street Station, and it happened by coincidence.

The three firefighters usually work at different stations in the city, but with some of their coworkers taking time off for Memorial Day weekend, they were all called into the Southbridge Street Station to fill in.

While the three women said it's just another day at work, it's still something special for them.

Melvin said, "Everybody else on my shift, it's all men. So it's a different dynamic. Gina and Melissa are both phenomenal women and firefighters so it's nice to have the opportunity to work together on a truck for a day."

Genatossio-Lauder said, "It's a good surprise. I got to work with two great firefighters. So, it really was a nice change and it's good to have the camaraderie together."

Mercadante said, "They asked me which truck I wanted to be on and I'm like 'I want to hang out with Robin.' And we heard Gina was coming down and they're like: 'Oh my God, all-female crew.' So we kind of just thought it was kind of cool to just be together."

Melvin said while there are not many women firefighters in the department, the dynamic is changing and firefighting is definitely a career path women can take.
