LUDLOW, Mass. - Things are looking up at Lupa Zoo in Ludlow.

"Hopefully in the coming week, we don't have to wear masks, but everyone has to be comfortable and do whatever they want," said Joan Lupa, the zoo's president.

Lupa said business is good so far this year, especially compared to 2020 when they opened in June and the coronavirus kept some people away.

"Last year was very challenging," said Lupa. "We had to build a new hand washing system, sanitizing locations, but it worked out very well."

Right now, they aren't selling food, just snacks. It could change as restrictions across the state ease up and people come to the zoo looking for an outdoor activity. The zoo is an easy place to stay six feet away from others.

"We are a quite well-spread zoo," Lupa said. "It's on 20 acres which is very comfortable for our guest to keep distances, social distance and still enjoy."

If you do come out to the zoo, you can still feed the animals. They do ask that you are courteous and use hand washing stations when available and social distance, so everyone at the zoo stays safe.

"You walk as you please. You take as much time as you want," Lupa said. "Children can play outdoors as long as they want."

As Lupa Zoo enters its anticipated busy season, they are looking to provide a sense of normalcy for families.

"I hope everyone will take the time and come and visit us, enjoy the nature and learn about the animals and appreciate the environment," said Lupa.
