President Joe Biden is freezing federal student loan payments through September of this year, but Congressman Jim McGovern is hoping to see student debt canceled nationwide.

The Worcester Democrat describes student loan debt as a matter of racial justice, saying decades of discrimination has led to Black and brown students having less wealth to help pay for college.

McGovern also said it’s a matter of economic justice and opportunity, as the $1.5 trillion debt restricts the economy.

Some Congressional Democrats have called for relief as high as $50,000 per borrower.

McGovern said his hope is to relieve as much as possible.

He said, "Especially in the aftermath of this pandemic. Lori Trahan and I would like a higher number, but look, we have to deal with the realities of congress. But we're going to fight for the biggest amount of relief we can get."

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts is also in favor of canceling up to $50,000 in student loan debt.
