WORCESTER, Mass. - The new Registry of Motor Vehicles Service Center [RMV] in Worcester is expected to open this year.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT], the new location at the former Big Y Supermarket at 50 Southwest Cutoff will be open for business in late fall.

MassDOT signed a lease agreement last month and will be relocating the service center from its current location at 611 Main Street in downtown Worcester.

According to MassDOT, the state completed a competitive procurement process to find a new location for the Worcester RMV.

When Spectrum News 1 first reported on a possible move from the RMV’s current Main Street location, MassDOT said the building was safe, but deteriorating. The state said significant improvements were needed to continue serving customers, and an upgrade to the current property would cause major disruptions.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the RMV has shifted additional services to be accessible online and still has a no walk-in policy in place at its service centers.

Last March, Worcester’s local Department of Transitional Assistance [DTA] office opened at the Big Y location. The DTA office closed shortly after it opened due to the coronavirus pandemic and remains closed to in-person visits.
