WORCESTER, Mass. - The big day is here. We are just hours away fromOpening Day at Polar Park and another chapter in the rich history of baseball in Worcester will be written.
The $160 million dollar Polar Park will host fans for the very first time on Tuesday when the Worcester Red Sox take on the Syracuse Mets at 3:05 p.m.
It’s not the first game of the season for the WooSox. The team is coming off a six-game series against the Buffalo Bison at an alternate site in New Jersey.
The WooSox (2-4) dropped four of the six games.
But the team is ready to play and Worcester is ready to have them. The end of a years-long project is just what the city needs.
Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Tim Murray told Spectrum News 1, “Seeing young people, kids, my own family, just comments from parents how kids are excited, families are excited to get together after a very trying year with COVID-19. To be a gathering place to sit together and watch the future Red Sox stars playing here in the city."
The ballpark is still undergoing some construction, but it is game ready. The game has sold out its nearly 2,400 available seats.
Special Opening Day ceremonies will start at 2 p.m.
