MONSON, Mass. - David Cavannah started wood carving three years ago, but it looks like he has been doing it his entire life.

"I started using a chainsaw five years ago, cutting trees down for people and I decided to get creative with it," Cavannah said. "And the more I did it, the more I grew a passion for it."

Cavannah stays busy working as a handy man, but finds the time to go out to his backyard close to 40 hours a week.

"I do it in between jobs. I would love to do it full time, but right now I am just getting my name out there so it's tough to pay the bills with wood carving," said Cavannah.

He's also done wood carving on site. He knows every piece of wood is different. Sometimes carving can take a couple of hours and other times even longer, especially when it involves a harder wood. He has an alligator displayed in his yard that took him 30 hours to finish. He said he could've cut that in half by using a different wood.

"I've done all kinds of things from big squirrels, to dogs, people, mascots, whatever people want I am happy to give it a try," said Cavannah.

There is no carving Cavannah can't and won't do.

"I always tell people: 'Your vision is my goal,' so they give me an idea what they want. So I take essentially a tree that is no longer growing leaves and giving us the oxygen we need to live and I am able to create something beautiful out of it and bring it back to life," Cavannah said.
