ADAMS, Mass. - An Adams couple was arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court on Thursday on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment in connection with a death of a child.
Matthew Tucker and Cassandra Barlow-Tucker were serving as foster parents for 10-month-old Kristoff Zenopolous when Kristoff was discovered deceased in his crib in February of 2020.
The Chief Medical Examiner's office determined Kristoff died of complications from strep and pneumonia.
Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington says their investigation determined Kristoff's death was preventable.
Harrington said, "Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Ilberg presented evidence to the grand jury back in March that antibiotics routinely are used to treat these underlying illnesses, and that the Tuckers’ failure to obtain medical care caused Kristoff to develop widespread infection."
The state sentencing guidelines for the involuntary manslaughter charge are 40 to 60 months in state prison, with a maximum sentence of 20 years.
