WORCESTER COUNTY, Mass. - State Senator Ryan Fattman is speaking out after filing a lawsuit against the director of the state's Office of Campaign and Political Finance.
Fattman said Michael Sullivan is accusing him of violating campaign finance rules.
The senator donated money to the Sutton Republican Town Committee, which later gave money to the campaign of his wife, Stephanie Fattman, the Worcester County Register of Probate, and other politicians.
Fattman said Sullivan is accusing him of violating the $100 limit on what candidates can give to each other, but he says state law allows unlimited donations to committees.
Fattman said he brought the lawsuit to make this case public.
“To say that this is illegal all of a sudden, re-interpret the law is just unacceptable. And to do it in the weaning hours of your career when you were clearly targeting two republicans who have had success locally when 2,429 are doing this it just doesn’t make any sense," said Fattman.
A judge did rule against the Fattmans this week.
We reached out to both the Office of Campaign and Political Finance, and the Attorney General's office. Neither would provide a comment.
