ADAMS, Mass. - The suspect in a homicide investigation in Adams is being held without bail after his arraignment Monday afternoon.
17-year-old Angel Nieves is charged with first degree murder in the death of 34-year-old Benjamin Martinez.
Martinez was found with a gunshot wound Thursday evening at an apartment in Adams.
Several law enforcement offices conducted the investigation, including Adams and North Adams police departments, a Massachusetts State Police detective unit, and the Berkshire County sheriff's office.
Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington said although Nieves is under 18, he will be tried as an adult.
"Under the current statute, he is being prosecuted basically the way any individuals are prosecuted for murder. That's the fairly new procedure here in Massachusetts. So my office will be presenting this matter to a grand jury and seeking an indictment," Harrington said.
Nieves pleaded not guilty. He is next due in court for a pre-trial hearing at the end of April.
