Soon to be medical school graduates found out where they'll be starting their residency training Friday. At UMass Medical School's "Match Day" is one of the most anticipated events for students.

This year, the school held the ceremony with a socially distanced drive-in. The program's 168-students matched with medical residency programs around the country and 39 will be going to UMass Memorial.

"It’s a very special day in the life of a physician. Everyone of us has gone through it. Really amazing for students who commit and they have to commit to get into medical school and then succeed in medical school and now this is an affirmation of all that hard work” said UMass Medical School Chancellor Michael Collins.

"I’m so excited. It’s a really great thing to be here with everyone outside celebrating our matches and starting the next part of our training" said Nili Amir.

"I’m really excited to be joining some really incredible doctors and to be a part of the amazing efforts that they’ve put forward" said Kelsey Jones.

UMass Med School's chancellor said their applications are up 20% this year and says its good time to get into the field.

Last year, match day was held online and many graduates headed to the frontlines to help battle the coronavirus.
