MASS. - Many of us may be using space heaters to help keep their homes warm this weekend.

The state's Fire Marshal  is reminding people they can cause house fires if not used properly.

Peter Ostroskey says they should always be three feet from anything flammable and plugged into their own dedicated outlet.

Ostroskey said, “Don’t use extension cords because they do draw a significant amount of electricity. You can heat up extension cords. So make sure it’s plugged directly into the wall. Don’t run cords under carpets or anything like that and make sure they’re clear of any combustibles.”

Ostroskey also says space heaters should never be left unattended.
