After more than a decade of showing his work at art shows, photographer Stephen Donaldson finally has a gallery of his own in Great Barrington.
"There's a larger collection, a more broad collection. There's more work from other parts of the world and not just the Berkshires that I can have them come and see and view, and hopefully buy," said Donaldson.
Donaldson's photography focuses on the iconic landscapes and landmarks of the Berkshires. He said sometimes it takes several attempts to capture the perfect image, like a shot of a misty morning at a Sheffield farm.
"It was something that I'd always wanted to capture, so I would go back there on occasion on what I thought would be the right day. Sometimes I wouldn't get anything, sometimes I'd get something similar, but on this particular day, everything hit."
The pandemic put a dent in Donaldson's business, as most art shows were canceled.
Although his gallery opened less than a month ago, he said he's already seeing the benefit of having a full-time, brick-and-mortar location.
"People have said that they've just seen me going up, and they've seen me through the windows, and they've taken a peak or they've been stopped in traffic and looked in and thought to themselves, 'I want to go in there and check that out,' and they have come in and several of them have placed purchases for new, large pieces of work I've never produced before," said Donaldson.
Donaldson said he's had to get creative to find new buyers for his work.
Now, he's trying to take advantage of the booming real-estate market with many people relocating to the region.
"There's a real great opportunity for me that I can hopefully capitalize on, of people coming here who want to adorn their homes with beautiful art, hopefully my art, and this is the right time for it."
