West Boylston Police Department’s firearm safety class has been popular this year. Before someone can apply for a license to carry, the state requires them to take a class like this one.
“Gun sales are through the roof. Ammunition sales are through the roof and the classes, I can’t keep up. As soon as I post them they are filled," Officer David Westerman, of the West Boylston Police Department said.
According to an FBI report, the number of people going through background checks to buy a gun in the state was up more than 60% in November, compared to last year.
“People are concerned about civil unrest and violent crime," said Westerman.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation says 40% of gun sales across country this year are to first time buyers. One participant in Sunday’s class says he wants to pursue a career in law enforcement.
“I’m learning a lot of things I didn’t expect. It’s helping me to be more focused and safe to myself and others in the future," said Stevenson Pierre, who took the gun safety class.
Officer David Westerman says he has also seen more women take his class recently.
“I think women want to be able to protect themselves and they are getting into firearms and training. And whether they are out running or shopping, they want the ability to protect themselves," said Westerman.
The department also offers two other firearm training classes for town residents who have their license to carry.
