Dave Deming works as a carpenter for his day job, but in his free time, he's an amateur drummer who also makes and sells a unique kind of drumstick.
"I didn't really want to buy the store brand anymore, and being a carpenter, I thought I could make my own. So I experimented with some shish kabob skewers, and then I thought of bamboo and started experimenting with bamboo, and it turned out bamboo has some fabulous qualities," said Deming.
The sticks, called Dem' Sticks, are made up of thin pieces of bamboo bundled together.
Deming said they create a softer, more interesting sound, which is very popular in modern jazz and alternative music.
"Today, drummers look to percussive sounds and odd samplings and odd sounds just from everything. So these really caught that wave of what drummers really want," said Deming.
Deming ships his sticks to musicians around the world. They've been used by the Rolling Stones and on Broadway for The Lion King.
"It's just fun, it's just pure fun. And if I can't be the guy on stage, you know, playing the drums, at least I'm supplying the tools for the drumming greats."
Deming said his business took a hit with live music coming to a halt during the pandemic, but now with virtual concerts becoming popular and the holiday season, he's back to spending his free time filling orders.
"Stick orders just stopped, but now, for some reason, they've started to pick back up, and maybe, because these help keep the volume of drumming down at home, maybe the other family members appreciate that too," said Deming.
