WORCESTER, Mass. - The Friends of Wetherell Park- Duffy Field held their second Earth Day-style group cleanup on Friday.

They met outside of Yeshiva Academy on Newton Ave for two reasons: to clean up trash and brush and to have their voices heard.

The group is made up of area residents working to save the park. They're against the installation of a proposed artificial turf field for the new Doherty Memorial high school development.

They say the clean up demonstrates the importance of neighborhood involvement in the city's parks.

Organizer Noel Choquette said, “The support that we've got here today has been awesome. It's all local families and with their children in taking an interest in improving the park for the neighborhood. We are really, really pleased with the effort. And this is the first of many."

"I’m a neighborhood person. I'm friends with everybody here. And we all feel the same way. This park should stay the way it is," said Rabbi Mendel Fogelman of Chabad Lubavitch of Central Massachusetts.

The event also served as an opportunity to show appreciation to the group's volunteers who care for the park.
