For more than a century, it was known as Assumption College.

But 2020 marks a new era for the school.

"A significant milestone in Assumption's history, 116 years after our founding, we begin a new chapter as Assumption University," said Father Dennis Gallagher.

The Salisbury Street institution officially changed their name in June. On Sunday, they unveiled their new welcoming sign.

The goal is to expand opportunities for students.

"It represents the academic nature of the academic programs we have to offer, and the growth of those programs over time. Particularly, in new areas of study for example in the healthcare area with nursing and physicians assistants," said Assumption President Francesco Cesareo

And with a new name comes some new responsibilities for Assumption.

Cesareo said,"You have to demonstrate that those graduate programs have been strong over a period of time. So you can't just develop programs over night and say hey let's become a university."

University status has allowed Assumption to restructure into five schools: Liberal arts and sciences, business, nursing, health professions, and graduate studies.

Students and staff are ready to start Assumption's newest chapter.

Senior Lilly O'Connor said, "It really means so much to all of us. We're so excited to show off Assumption's new University status. And as a senior I'm so proud to be a part of the first graduating class of Assumption University."

Cesareo said, "For me it represents a natural evolution for what we've been working on for over a decade."
