Congressman Richard Neal has won the Democratic primary for the 1st Congressional District of Massachusetts.
Neal and his opponent, Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse, have been campaigning throughout Massachusetts, letting voters know what they hope to do in congress moving forward.
The polls closed at 8 PM on Tuesday and just two hours later, the numbers showed Neal had won the election.
Neal was first elected into Congress in 1988 and is in his first term as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.
Neal took about 60 perecent of the vote, including two-thirds of his hometown of Springfield and Morse's homtown of Holyoke.
Prior to being elected into congress, Neal was on the city council in the city of Springfield and was also mayor.
Neal said he will continue defending social security. He also said it is time for investment in old infrastructure, like bridges, airports, roads, rails. He also said he is pushing for the East-West rail from Worcester to Pittsfield to Springfield to become a reality.
"Like I said previously in this campaign, it's legislation that changes our lives," said Neal.
Neal thanked the First Congressional District in his speech and he also specifically thanked the people of Holyoke for voting for him.
