UMass Medical School is looking for healthy volunteers to take part in a clinical trial for a coronavirus vaccine.

It will test whether a vaccine candidate can prevent infection with the virus which causes COVID-19.

The medical school wants to enroll several hundred volunteers as part of a much larger trial.

The goal is to find a vaccine to prevent COVID-19 in people who have not been infected by the virus prior to immunization, and prevent covid-19 regardless of whether participants have previously been infected.

"This vaccine has been tested in phase 1 trials in several hundred people around the world and looks to be safe with no serious adverse events. What we're testing in this trying is whether it's efficacious for COVID-19" says Dr. Robert Finberg.

The school is looking for healthy, non-pregnant adults aged 18 to 85 years old.

Half of the group will receive the vaccine; the other half will receive a placebo. Participants will be given two doses, with periodic follow up visits over the next two years.
