If you've driven through the intersection of McKinstry Avenue and Dale Street, the chances are "Bunny" has been there waving at all the cars that go by.

"There are people in their 60s that remember Bunny from when they were kids," said local artist Johnny Miranda.

He stands there every day, even in the rain and snow, to make sure he says hello to everyone. He is so popular, that during a brief interview with Spectrum News 1, every person who passed by honked and yelled out to Bunny.

"He's a star of Chicopee," one man said.

"We love you," another woman shouted out.

Bunny was excited to hear all the shoutouts and support from members in the community.

"Everybody loves me now," said Bunny.

Bunny has such a legacy that Miranda wanted to use his talents and artistic skills to honor him. Since a statue wasn't possible, he decided to paint a mural of Bunny with his signature wave. The mural is at the Gulf Gas Station where Bunny always stands.

"Doing this not just honors Bunny, but goes to unify the community," said Miranda.

It started out with a sketch on canvas, and just hours later it came to life on the wall of the convenience store. Miranda said it was made possible by community activist Paul Parks, who raised money for supplies and helped get permission from the owner to paint the mural.

"He did a good job," said Bunny.

Bunny loves the mural so much, he crosses the street every day to see it up close. Bunny says it is the perfect birthday present.

"My birthday is coming up too," he said. "October 13th."

The unveiling of the mural will be done closer to Bunny's birthday.

"I'm going to be old, I'm going to be 76," Bunny laughed.

The mural is so close to being finished, so anyone who drives by at a time when Bunny isn't there, will still see the painting of him waving on the wall.

"If you are having a bad day driving, you see Bunny, you just become happy," Miranda said.

Miranda added that he wanted to use his artistic ability to make this possible and chose to make the mural very colorful to match Bunny's personality.
