The Fourth of July holiday weekend is quickly approaching and with coronavirus concerns causing the cancellation of fireworks displays, many people seem to be buying their own.
Fireworks are illegal to buy and use in Massachusetts. However, just over the state border in Connecticut, sales are legal.
The TNT Fireworks stand has been operating for 10 years. Owner Heidi Mclaughlin says sales are up this year, and attributes it in part to towns canceling their fireworks displays.
She says when it comes to safety, the business is vetted each year and they abide by state laws.
McLaughlin said, “In order to set up here, I have to be inspected by the Fire Marshal building, electrical, everything. They are all aware of the safety issues here and we are abiding by the law everything is a ground based sparkling fountain. Nothing is going to go aerial, nothing is going to shoot up in the air and go off."
Again, it is illegal to transport fireworks into Massachusetts, even if they were purchased legally elsewhere. In an effort to cut down on people illegally setting off fireworks, a dedicated hotline has been set up to deal with fireworks complaints in Worcester.
