A Millbury firefighter is off the job after racially insensitive posts were made on his Facebook page Monday night. The department and town are taking action, but many in the community say it's not enough.
Mark Dagle, who the department says went by Markus Dagle on Facebook, was suspended from the department after the posts were made. The department says he resigned before they could terminate him.
Acting Millbury Town Manager James Kelley says, "We apologize for any pain or anger this ignorant person may have caused to anyone subjected to his outbursts."
The posts included comments on the KKK and the Black Lives Matter movement. They also included racist statements.
Millbury resident Charisse says, "He called African Americans monkeys and told us to go back to Africa which is such a ridiculous thing to say."
Community members, like Charisse, say the response to Mark Dagle's alleged comments was not enough.
She says, "He literally went on a tirade and said several malicious things and they didn't address any of them directly."
The department first suspended Dagle and said he, along with all other members, would undergo sensitivity training. Charisse has three bi-racial children and does not feel like they are safe.
"I would walk to the Worcester line and call 911 before I called from Millbury," she says.
Dagle served on the department for six months. The town says they don't condone racism in any form and the fire department believes in protecting and serving all residents.
Kelley says, "The sentiments he exhibited are totally opposite of what our fire department stands for."
