NORTHBOROUGH - A group from Algonquin Regional High School is looking to make big changes to stop what they're saying is a racist school culture.

A petition on Change.org has more than 1,100 signatures [as of 6/13 at 3:30 PM] calling for the Northborough-Southborough school district to change the school's name and mascot.

The group says there's no record the Algonquin Tribe gave the school permission to use their name. The mascot -- the tomahawk -- is an ax-like weapon.

The petition states, in part, the name and mascot "...perpetuate racist stereotypes, classifying natives as violent and barbaric...And since Algonquin Regional High School's conception in 1959, racist attire, chants and behavior have been commonplace."

The group says it's time to make the change to stop the appropriation and racism.
