WORCESTER - A City Councilor is proposing the state renames the Worcester County District Courthouse to honor one of the most influential women in Worcester's history.

Councilor At-Large Moe Bergman is asking the City Council to work together and urge state leaders to consider renaming the courthouse after Women's Suffrage Movement leader Sarah E. Wall.

During the mid-19th century, Wall protested taxation without representation and had her home seized and sold.

Her case reached the Massachusetts Supreme Court where Wall represented herself in court.

Councilor Bergman said educating the community about their history is important.

"Here is an opportunity to little or not cost to the taxpayer, not a monument or a statue. Putting a name on a building. But the value of putting a name on a building is that people get educated and ask questions: 'Oh, who is Sarah Wall?' and you can go to the kiosk at the courthouse and find out who she was," Bergman said.

The Worcester County courthouse opened at its current location on Main St. in 2007.
