Fruit Fair is the only family owned, independent grocery store in Chicopee. They, like larger chains are seeing an increased need for essential items during the coronavirus outbreak.
"We are weathering the storm better than any other chain or supermarket. We have never run of meat, we have never run out of deli and biggest thing, we have never run out of toilet paper,” said owner, Sam Newell.
Fruit Fair works with 15-18 local farmers in surrounding towns. It gives them access to eggs, milk, produce and other items and helps control their prices.
"That the magic of dealing locally is the community has each others back on crisis like this and that’s what I want anyone to focus on and remember,” said Newell.
The store has also taken additional measures to ensure safety of customers. They stepped up cleaning efforts and allow customers to call in their order to pick up.
"We take EBT as payment so we waive the fees for people who pay with EBT.”
She also says she is thankful for the support they are getting as a small business and will continue to do all they can do keep shoppers safe.
"Especially with the virus I have seen a huge increase in community support especially from the nearby 5 mile radius.”
It is still required for all shoppers to wear a mask when they come in the store, but if you come in and don't have one the staff will give you one, along with gloves and sanitizer.
