WORCESTER - Positive coronavirus cases inside of the Worcester Walmart led the City to make the store close its doors.
City Manager Ed Augustus says the majority of those cases came in the last seven days.
Over 270 Walmart employees were tested for COVID-19 on Thursday. More than 100 employees will be tested on Friday.
Mike Vulcano owns the Subway restaurant inside of the store. He says the closure and jump in cases comes as a shock.
"People were checking out their groceries. They were told 'Stop what you're doing' and out the door. It was abrupt. That, I think ,was the most shocking thing," Vulcano said.
Vulcano says with such a large cluster of cases, his main concern was the people who were inside of the building.
"I didn't realize that Walmart was going to test myself and all of my employees. So, I was trying to find a way to get my employees tested even if I was going to have to pay for it," Vulcano said.
But he also has concerns for his business moving forward.
"You have a big food order yesterday. $3,000 worth of food that you've got to sell and now it's sitting in the fridge and freezer," Vulcano said.
The City Manager says all 400-plus employees will be tested for the coronavirus before the store is allowed to open its doors. The entire building has also be professionally cleaned to limit any risks moving forward.
