LUDLOW - Residents consider the town of Ludlow to be a quiet and safe place to live.

Vic Musante was walking his son's dogs in a neighborhood. "Even a small town like Ludlow has it's actors and characters," he said.

Thursday evening, police responded to the scene of a gun shot fired on Center Street. It's not typical for the town. This was the first call of this kind police received this year.

"A firearm was shot, but it missed the individual it was pointed at," said Ludlow Police Dept. Sgt. Michael Gilrein.

No one was injured, but police say the suspect fled the scene.

"We don't really know why this happened," said Sgt. Gilrein. "It was a surprise to everyone at the scene."

Police identified the man as 62-year-old Robert Stallone.

They say he is armed and dangerous. He allegedly drove off with the pistol in a white 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis with Massachusetts plates 961LD9. Police say when they arrived, they immediately secured the scene and located the victim and witnesses involved. Evidence was also secured and processed from the scene.

"We would urge him to go ahead and turn himself in," said Sgt. Gilrein.  But until he does, police say anyone who encounters Stallone should call 911.

Danielle Francisco has lived in Ludlow her entire life and does not feel unsafe knowing the suspect is at large.

"Hopefully I'm in the right time at right place, because I have my LTC. So I'm not too worried about it myself, personally," she said.

Musante says even in a town like Ludlow, everyone should always be alert.

"I think nowadays you have to keep your wits about you," he said. "No matter where you are."

Police report gun violence has become more frequent in the past few years.

"To compare this over a 20-year period, absolutely recently has been far more than it used to," said Sgt. Gilrein.

And for Musante, he also times have changed.  "It's not the same as when i was a kid," said Mustante. "It is not as safe as it used to be."

The incident is under investigation but anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ludlow Police Department.
