WORCESTER - Massachusetts drivers may soon have another set of eyes watching them.

The State Senate will debate a bill to allow red light cameras to be turned on across the state.

Cameras would look for a variety of infractions, including

  • Failing to stop at a red light
  • Illegal right-on-red turns
  • Traveling more than five miles per hour over the posted speed limit
  • Blocking an intersection.

Violators would face a fine.

AAA reports more than 900 people in the U.S. were killed due to red light crashes in 2017. Massachusetts had 43 deaths from 2008 to 2017.

Communities would be limited to the number of cameras they can use. And drivers wouldn't be fined for going through a yellow light.

The bill will go in front of the Senate on Thursday for debate.
