CHICOPEE - As many people make New Years resolutions, a lot of them involve exercising or joining a gym.

An employee at Club Fitness Chicopee, Ben Souza says that from Black Friday to January, a lot more people sign up for gym memberships. He says that around Valentine’s Day, people tend to “fall off.”

Kevin Hough comes to Planet Fitness four days a week. He says he’s been one of those people before.

"I slacked for a while,” said Hough. “But now I am back."

Hough says his fitness goals started way before the new year.

"I’ve lost 60 pounds already, and I want to lose another 100 plus, lets just say," he said.

Souza says it’s best to start working out by setting small goals that are more manageable.

"So every month you are achieving something and it will keep you coming back," Souza said.

Hough also found setting small goals effective for his workout routine. He says he’s started off slow and has been able to build each time.

"I started with 30 minutes of cardio and now I'm up to 40,” Hough said.

Souza recommends having someone to hold you accountable so you don’t cheat yourself or stop exercising regularly.

"Come with a partner,” said Souza. “Someone who can help you stay honest and keep you on track."

He says having a personal trainer can also help personalize your workout to your fitness needs.

Hough has already come a long way and offers different advice from his personal experiences.

"Stop making excuses and just do it,” he said. “Some days its hard to get yourself up and get here, but when you get here, you are so glad you did and see the results and how you feel."
