Massachusetts is preparing drivers for when they install new mileage-based exit numbers on highways beginning next year.

MassDOT held a public meeting in Worcester Monday night to give Bay State drivers information about the federally-mandated system. Massachusetts is one of th last states to make the change. The new system will be implemented on a route-by-route basis, starting in Western Massachusetts and moving eastward.

The changes are scheduled to be completed in spring 2021. During the transition period, old exit number signs will be a each converted exit for a minimum of two years.
