A message of hate was found late last week on the campus of Worcester State University.

Worcester State University students like Mike Santurri are disturbed about swastikas found drawn on the door of a men’s bathroom on campus. The school sent a letter to students this weekend saying a faculty member found the offensive Nazi symbols which have since been removed.

Worcester State student Mike Santurri said, "I think anybody should be offended by that. Especially if you're of (the) Jewish religion but in general, how do you see that and laugh, knowing what it represents."

Another WSU studen Claire Dowd agrees. "It makes us feel pretty insecure because of the behavior, you don't know what they were thinking."

The Jewish Federation of Central Mass says the antisemitic symbol reflects hatred of Jews. Executive director Steven schimmel says this incident hits too close to home..."particularly when it's in your backyard, it creates fear and makes you question the neighborhood you live in."

Schimmel says he hopes Worcester State continues to train its faculty and students to recognize the severity and significance of this situation. Schimmel, "The people who commit these types of actions are outcasts in society. People sitting at home angry and frustrated and Jews have always been a convenient scapegoat."

The University had another racially charged incident in 2018 when a residence hall poster was defaced with a racial slur. Worcester State has since had conversations on inclusivity. They say they do not condone offensive symbols or language and "strive to create a welcoming, inclusive learning environment where all students, staff and faculty -- regardless of background -- can thrive"

Santurri says the swastikas should offend every person on campus. "Remember not everyone thinks that way. There's some people who think bad things and do bad things, but there's a lot of people that agree with me." Fellow student Claire Dowd agrees, "Nobody deserves that. I hope they find the person who did it"
