Skylee Leclair is trading in her apron for a pair of boots. In May, instead of taking orders from customers, she'll be taking them from a drill sergeant.
The 17-year-old Leicester native enlisted in the United States Army to become a fire control specialist and EMT.
"It was a hard decision but one definitely worth it," said Leclair.
The junior in high school will be gone for three and a half months over the summer at basic training. She will come home and finish out her senior year before completing her military job training and serving full time.
Working at Farmhouse Diner in Leicester has prepared Skylee for the military in more ways than one.
"I feel waitressing will help me with people skills in the Army, as well as learning how to listen and act fast and be on your toes," said Leclair.
It's the customers who have helped shaped her as a person, and leaving regulars like Jim Veroneau is one of the hardest things to do. Veroneau said the songs she sings during her shifts will be stuck in his head all day long.
At least 25 people came out over the weekend to wish her luck as she worked her last shift.
"I've met a lot of great people here and Skylee has been the highlight. She's very delightful and very attentive," said customer Patti Burdett.
"Every time I get coffee, she knows I dislike the pansy mug, so she makes sure she gives it to me every single time," joked customer Allen Phillips.
It was the best going away gift she could have asked for. She's excited and nervous to start her next adventure.
