WORCESTER, Mass. - As construction of the new South High Community School nears completion, the current building will soon be facing the wrecking ball.

According to the city of Worcester, abatement work inside the school is set to begin June 1, with demolition estimated to start June 21.

The building opened in 1978 and will be replaced by a more than $200 million state-of-the-art school.

Crews broke ground on the project in 2018, and while they lost some days of construction at the beginning of the pandemic, the building is still on schedule to open this fall.
